Year in Review II: Production
I wrote (what is by my standards) a ton of fic in 2008: I broke 10,000 words! (Word says 10,221, to be exact.) Okay, half of that was written in 2007 and then polished and posted in January, but whatever. Here's the breakdown:

Battlestar Galactica
Between the Dark and the Dream, Laura/Lee, R. Began 05/03/07; finished 01/27/08; posted 01/27/08. 4,760 words.

The Facts of Life
Dos and Don'ts, gen, PG. Began circa 12/16/07; finished 01/25/08; posted 01/31/08. 265 words.
B'nai B'rith, Eastland Chapter, gen, PG. Began circa 12/17/07; finished 01/25/08; posted 01/31/08. 339 words.
The Burn Book, Blair/Jo, PG. Began 01/25/08; finished 02/01/08; posted 02/01/08. 1,062 words.

Xena: Warrior Princess
To add a richer strain, Xena/Gabrielle, PG-13. Began 05/31/08; finished 07/15/08; posted 07/15/08. 1,228 words.

Indiana Jones
The Charm, Indy/Marion, NC-17. Began 11/15/08; finished 12/19/08; posted 12/25/08. 2,567 words.

Who knew that my two longest stories would be het? It still blows my mind that I wrote 2,500 words of hetsmut—of Indiana Jones, no less, which I hadn't even seen until this year. Writing a triptych of the first time Indy and Marion became intimate in each iteration of their relationship occurred to me when I had to correct a request for "post-Crystal Skull second first-time Indy/Marion," but I discarded the idea because I "didn't" write NC-17 m/f—I had, after all, faded to black in "Between the Dark and the Dream." (The third first-time I wrote is, by the way, not at all the one I'm looking for. That one is much more awkward and grim.) Writing this fic meant fixing, for a little while, my interpretation of Indy, Marion, and their relationship(s). A few thoughts:

Obviously, these movies are pulp adventures, not documentaries, but from a Watsonian perspective, I still have to account for Indy's willy-nilly destruction of the context that would allow him to interpret the artifacts he recovers. Indy's archeology is not motivated by a desire to understand cultures now gone from this earth; artifacts are an end for him, not a means. His artifacts are intrinsically valuable as works of art; furthermore, these beautiful things should be seen by the public: as he says in The Last Crusade, "This belongs in a museum!"

Indy is also notable for his Clark Kent/Superman-like duality: he's dorky and bow-tied at Marshall, telling his students to "forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world" because "seventy percent of all archeology is done in the library"; then he puts on a certain hat and...well, you know the rest. And while I'm not contesting Indy's badassery, or that obtaining a Ph.D. in archeology in 1925 was not like it is today, I like his nerdy side, and I like the idea that Marion does not suffer artifice.

Which brings me to Miss Ravenwood. Going by the original canon, Indy is 28 and Marion is 15 during their first romance (their birthdays have been subsequently adjusted by the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Guide, respectively, so that the current canon is closer to 27 and 17). "My" Indy isn't a pederast (unlike, say, my Bruce Wayne), but it's not as if he's out-of-step with period mores. It also helps that Marion is something of a force of nature.

I also released two fanmixes, one for Cold Case 2x22 "Best Friends" and one for BioShock. I still identify as a vidder; I guess I should actually vid.
